How image compression works
JPG and WebP shrink images by discarding detail the eye barely notices. A quality around 70 to 80 percent usually cuts the file size dramatically with little visible difference.
PNG is lossless and benefits less. To make PNG photos smaller, convert them to WebP or JPG, or limit the maximum width. If a result would be larger than the original, the original is kept.
How to use the Image Compressor
- 1Drop your images into the box.
- 2Set the quality and, optionally, a maximum width or new format.
- 3Compare sizes and download the results or a ZIP.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser.
What quality should I choose?
Start at 75 percent. Lower it for smaller files, raise it if you see artifacts.
Why did my PNG not get smaller?
PNG is lossless. Convert to WebP, or reduce the width to save space.
